Deck Clean, Stain & Paint Services in South East Queensland
What Is Deck Clean, Stain or Paint?
South East Queensland's hot, humid, subtropical climate is one of the toughest environments in Australia for outdoor timber. UV, summer storms, year-round moisture, and biological growth all break down unprotected decking fast — leaving it grey, mouldy, slippery, and prone to splitting. Once a deck reaches that point, simply re-coating won't deliver a good result; the surface needs to be properly prepared first.
Our deck service covers the full spectrum: from a one-off restoration clean through to a complete clean-and-recoat, finished with your choice of penetrating stain or solid colour paint. We handle the entire job — preparation, cleaning, drying, minor repairs (where needed), and application — so you end up with a deck that looks great and is properly protected for years.
Stain or Paint? Choose the Right Finish for Your Deck
Staining and painting are not interchangeable — they're different products that produce very different results, with different lifespans and maintenance requirements. We'll walk you through both options during the quote and recommend what suits your deck, your style, and how much ongoing upkeep you want to commit to.
Decking Stain
Penetrating, natural-look finish
A penetrating stain soaks into the timber pores rather than sitting on top — protecting the wood from the inside while keeping the natural grain and texture visible. The result is a warm, natural-look finish that ages gracefully and is easy to maintain over time.
Best for
- Hardwood decks (spotted gum, merbau, blackbutt, ironbark)
- Customers who want to see and feel the natural timber grain
- Decks in good condition that don't need colour correction
- Owners who prefer a lower-maintenance recoating cycle
Key benefits
- Showcases natural timber grain and character
- Penetrates and protects from inside the timber
- Easier to recoat — typically just a clean and refresh
- Doesn't peel or flake when worn
- Available in clear, natural, and tinted finishes
Typical lifespan: 2–4 years before refresh, depending on sun exposure and use.
Decking Paint
Solid colour, full-coverage finish
Decking paint sits on top of the timber as a solid coating, fully covering the surface in a chosen colour. It's the right choice for decks that have heavy weathering, mismatched timber, or where the owner wants a specific colour or modern aesthetic — particularly popular for grey, charcoal, and white-painted decks.
Best for
- Older or weathered decks where the timber has lost its character
- Composite or treated pine decks
- Customers wanting a specific colour or contemporary look
- Decks where individual board mismatch needs to be hidden
Key benefits
- Full colour control — choose any shade
- Hides imperfections, mismatched boards, and weathering
- Strong UV and weather barrier
- Modern, polished aesthetic
- Excellent for matching architectural features
Typical lifespan: 3–5 years before recoat — but recoating requires more prep (sanding back peeling areas) than staining.
Not sure which suits your deck? We'll inspect the timber, condition, and surrounding aesthetic during the quote and walk you through real samples before you commit. We can also do a small test patch of either finish on request.
Our Deck Clean, Stain or Paint Process
- Deck Inspection & Quote
We assess the deck's surface, timber species, current finish, level of weathering, and condition of fixings. We also identify whether any boards need replacing, sanding, or minor repair before treatment. From this, we provide an accurate quote and recommend whether a clean, clean and stain, or clean and paint is the right approach.
- Minor Repairs & Sanding (if required)
Where boards are cupped, raised nails or screws need attention, or the timber requires sanding before staining or painting, we handle this as part of the service for an additional cost confirmed in the quote. Skipping this step is the most common reason DIY deck jobs fail prematurely — proper prep is critical.
- Soft Wash Deep Clean
All deck cleaning is done as a soft wash — diluted, biodegradable cleaning solution applied at low pressure to remove mould, algae, tannin staining, and grey weathering. We then rinse with controlled low pressure along the grain of the timber to prevent fibre damage, splintering, or board pitting that high-pressure washing causes. Worn or heavily weathered decks must be cleaned thoroughly before any stain or paint is applied — coatings won't bond properly to a dirty surface.
- Drying Period
The deck is allowed to dry for a minimum of 24 hours — longer in shaded areas or after heavy rain — before any stain or paint is applied. Applying product to damp timber is the single biggest cause of premature coating failure, so we don't rush this step regardless of weather pressure.
- Stain or Paint Application
Once dry, we apply your chosen finish — penetrating stain or solid colour paint — using brush, roller, or pad applicator depending on the product and deck profile. Standard application is two coats for full protection and even colour. Heavily weathered or absorbent timber may require a third coat, which we'll confirm before applying.
- Final Inspection & Care Instructions
We inspect the completed deck, walk through the result with you, and provide simple care instructions and a recommended maintenance schedule to maximise the life of the finish.
