What Is Filter Cleaning?
The pool filter is the mechanical heart of the pool's cleaning system — continuously removing fine debris, algae spores, and contaminants from the pool water. Over time, regardless of regular backwashing, all filter types accumulate oils, calcium scale, fine organic debris, and biofilm that gradually reduce filtration efficiency. A professional filter clean — which involves removing and fully cleaning cartridge elements or cleaning sand media with a de-scaling product — restores the filter to near-original capacity, improves water clarity, reduces the load on the pump, and extends the life of the filter media. In Queensland's year-round pool use environment, an annual filter clean (or bi-annual for heavily used pools) is recommended as part of a comprehensive pool maintenance program.
Our Filter Cleaning Process
- Filter Inspection
We inspect the filter pressure, flow rate, and the condition of the filter housing before opening to assess whether a standard clean or more significant service is required.
- Filter Isolation and Opening
The filter is isolated from the pump system, pressure is relieved safely, and the filter is opened. For cartridge filters, the elements are removed; for sand filters, the sand media is inspected.
- Cartridge Cleaning (Cartridge Filters)
Cartridge elements are hosed off thoroughly, then soaked in a cartridge-cleaning solution to dissolve oils, calcium, and biofilm. After soaking, elements are rinsed clean and inspected for damage or wear.
- Sand Treatment (Sand Filters)
For sand filters, a de-scaling and de-greasing filter cleaner is added to the sand media and allowed to soak before backwashing thoroughly. This restores the sand's filtration capacity.
- Reassembly and Testing
The filter is reassembled with fresh O-ring lubrication, pressure-tested for leaks, and the system is restarted and checked for correct operation and normal operating pressure.
