What Is Paving?
Quality paving transforms outdoor areas into functional, attractive spaces — defined pathways, welcoming driveways, and outdoor entertaining areas that add real value to any property in South East Queensland. But the material you see on top is only half the story. The base preparation underneath is what determines whether your paving looks great in 20 years or starts rocking, sinking, and cracking within two.
One Call Property Care supplies and installs the full range of residential paving materials across SEQ: concrete pavers (the most cost-effective option with a huge colour range), clay brick pavers (the traditional Queensland look that has been used here for over a century), natural stone including sandstone, travertine, bluestone, and granite, and porcelain outdoor tiles for premium indoor-outdoor flow. Each material has different base preparation requirements, bedding methods, jointing approaches, and performance characteristics — and Queensland's soil and climate conditions add another layer of complexity.
Base preparation is everything. For driveways and areas carrying vehicle loads, excavation depth is typically 150–200mm, with 100–150mm of compacted road base beneath the bedding layer. Paths and patios on stable ground can use shallower bases, but clay soils — particularly the reactive black clays of western Brisbane, Ipswich, and parts of Logan — require deeper, better-compacted bases than sandy coastal soils. Getting this wrong is the single most common cause of paving failure.
Bedding is the layer pavers sit in directly. Sand bedding (40–50mm of washed coarse sand) is used for most concrete and clay brick pavers. Mortar bedding (25–30mm) is used for natural stone, porcelain, and any surface requiring a more rigid bond. Bedding depth and mix matters — too thick or too thin both cause problems.
Jointing holds the pavers together and keeps weeds and insects out. Polymeric sand is the modern standard — it sets firm when wetted, resists ants and weeds far better than plain sand, and remains flexible enough to accommodate minor movement. Cement mortar jointing is used for natural stone and porcelain. Sealing is recommended for most materials in SEQ, protecting against staining, enhancing colour, and reducing weed germination in joints.
One material stands out for pool surrounds across SEQ: travertine. Its naturally cool surface temperature — significantly cooler underfoot than concrete or dark stone in direct Queensland sun — makes it the premium choice for pool decks. By contrast, bluestone and dark granite heat to uncomfortable temperatures in direct sun and are better suited to shaded areas or south-facing aspects.
Paver Material Types — Which Is Right for Your Project?
There is no single best paving material — the right choice depends on the application, your home's style, your budget, and how the surface will be used. Here is a plain-English comparison of the main options used across South East Queensland.
Concrete Pavers
Concrete pavers are the most widely used paving material in SEQ and for good reason — they offer an enormous range of colours, profiles, and sizes, are extremely durable, and represent the best value per installed square metre. Available in a range from basic grey to premium charcoal, cream, and terracotta profiles. Suitable for driveways, paths, and patios.
Best for
- Driveways (50–60mm thickness for vehicle traffic)
- Budget-conscious projects that still want a quality result
- Large patio and path areas
- Projects requiring a wide colour range
Key benefits
- Best value — widest colour and size range at lowest price point
- Very durable under vehicle and foot traffic when correctly specified
- Individual replacement easy and affordable
- Available in vehicle-rated thicknesses for driveways
Clay Brick Pavers
Clay brick pavers have been used in Queensland outdoor areas for over a century — for good reason. They are extremely durable, naturally weather-resistant, and develop a warm patina over time. The classic Queensland red brick paver suits traditional Queenslander and Federation style homes beautifully. Available in a range of red, terracotta, and buff tones.
Best for
- Traditional Queenslander and Federation-style homes
- Garden pathways and entertaining areas
- Feature driveways in established suburban areas
- Projects where a classic, enduring look is wanted
Key benefits
- Exceptionally durable — some clay brick pavements are 50+ years old and still performing
- Colour is through the full brick — does not fade or wear off
- Classic Queensland aesthetic that complements period homes
- Develops attractive patina over time
Sandstone
Sandstone is Queensland's natural stone — warm, earthy tones that suit the local environment and particularly complement Queenslander-style homes, garden settings, and semi-rural properties. It stays cooler in the sun than dark materials, is comfortable underfoot, and blends beautifully with planted gardens. Must be sealed to prevent staining. Not suitable for driveways.
Best for
- Garden pathways and entertaining areas
- Cottage and Queenslander-style properties
- Shaded courtyard and garden areas
- Projects where a natural, warm stone look is wanted
Key benefits
- Natural, warm tones that complement Queensland gardens
- Stays cooler underfoot than darker materials in sun
- Unique variation in each piece — no two areas look identical
- Excellent for garden paths and informal entertaining areas
Travertine
Travertine is the most popular premium paving material for pool surrounds and outdoor entertaining areas across SEQ, and for one critical reason: it stays naturally cool underfoot in direct Queensland sun. Its light, porous surface reflects heat and remains comfortable to walk on barefoot in conditions where concrete and dark stone become uncomfortably hot. It has a classic, European aesthetic that suits contemporary and traditional homes alike.
Best for
- Pool surrounds — the premier SEQ choice
- Premium outdoor entertaining areas
- Contemporary and Mediterranean-style homes
- Any area used barefoot in Queensland summer
Key benefits
- Naturally cool underfoot in direct Queensland sun — the primary reason for its popularity
- Premium, timeless aesthetic
- Very durable when sealed and maintained
- Non-slip tumbled edge finish standard
Bluestone / Granite
Bluestone and dark granite are premium contemporary paving materials — extremely durable, with a sophisticated dark tone that suits modern architectural styles. However, there is a critical consideration for SEQ: dark stone absorbs significant heat in direct sun and becomes very hot underfoot. Both materials are best used in shaded areas, south-facing aspects, or applications where barefoot comfort is not a requirement.
Best for
- Contemporary and modern-style homes
- Shaded entertaining areas and courtyards
- South or east-facing aspects that avoid the afternoon sun
- Commercial and feature applications
Key benefits
- Extremely durable — one of the hardest paving materials available
- Sophisticated contemporary aesthetic
- Very low maintenance when sealed
- Wide format options for a seamless modern look
Porcelain Outdoor Tiles
Porcelain outdoor tiles are the premium choice for creating a seamless indoor-outdoor flow — the same tile or matching tile can run from inside the living area through to the outdoor entertaining space. They are extremely stain-resistant, do not require sealing, and come in contemporary large-format sizes. They require a mortar bed and are the highest-cost option. Not suitable for driveways.
Best for
- Premium indoor-outdoor entertaining areas
- Contemporary homes with large-format tile interiors
- Areas where stain resistance is critical (BBQ areas, outdoor kitchens)
- Covered alfresco areas and pergola floors
Key benefits
- Seamless indoor-outdoor aesthetic — can match internal tiles
- Stain-resistant — no sealing required
- Contemporary large-format sizes available
- Very low long-term maintenance
Material selection should consider the application, the sun exposure, whether the area will be used barefoot, your home's architectural style, and your budget. We will guide you through the options and provide samples during the quotation process.
Why Paving Is a Long-Term Investment
Quality paving on a correctly prepared base is a durable, attractive, and repairable surface — with significant advantages over concrete for the right applications.
- Individual paver replacement — damage one paver and you replace one paver, not the entire surface
- 20–30+ year lifespan on a correctly compacted and prepared base
- Premium aesthetics that lift property value and kerb appeal significantly
- Wide material selection to match any architectural style — from traditional Queenslander to contemporary
- Sealed pavers resist staining, weed growth, and surface weathering for years
- Travertine and sandstone remain comfortable underfoot in Queensland summer heat
- Permeable options available to assist with stormwater management on site
- Can be extended or modified over time without the whole surface needing replacement
The difference between paving that looks great in 20 years and paving that fails in two is almost entirely in the base preparation — and that is where we focus.
Our Paving Process
- Site Assessment & Material Selection
We assess the site, soil type, drainage requirements, and application. We discuss material options, colours, and patterns and provide a written quote covering excavation, base preparation, paver supply, and installation.
- Excavation & Sub-Base Preparation
The area is excavated to the required depth for the application and load. Compacted road base is laid and compacted in layers. Edge restraints are installed to prevent the base from spreading at the perimeter.
- Bedding Layer
A sand or mortar bedding layer is prepared to the correct depth and drainage falls. This layer is carefully screeded to level — it directly determines the final paver level and must be consistent throughout.
- Paver Laying & Cutting
Pavers are laid to the agreed pattern, starting from a reference point. Cut pavers are made accurately at edges, corners, and around obstacles using a masonry saw. The surface is checked for level and fall throughout.
- Jointing, Sealing & Handover
Joints are filled with polymeric sand or mortar as appropriate. Sealing is applied where specified. The surface is cleaned, excess material removed, and the finished area inspected before handover. A 30-day workmanship guarantee applies.
