What Is Garden Makeovers?
A garden makeover is not a full landscape build. There are no major earthworks, no new retaining walls, no complete paving projects. A makeover works with the bones of the existing garden — the layout, the levels, the established trees — and resets everything within that framework. Dead and dying plants are removed. Overgrown material is cleared or cut back hard. Soil is improved with compost, manure and conditioning. New plants are selected carefully for the specific site conditions and replanted with purpose. Beds are edged cleanly, mulched deeply, and any small structural additions — a garden light, a simple path section, a raised bed — are installed where they complete the space.
A garden makeover is the right solution for established homes where the layout works but the garden has run out of control, or where years of planting whatever was available have produced a chaotic mix of species that don't work together. It's also the most cost-effective approach for pre-sale situations where first impressions drive buyer decisions.
A makeover is not the right solution for every garden. If the underlying layout is wrong — poor drainage, levels that don't work, a design that fundamentally doesn't suit the block — a makeover just resets a bad foundation. In those cases, we'll be honest: a redesign or partial rebuild will produce a better result than refreshing what's there.
Queensland creates specific challenges and opportunities for garden makeovers. The warm, wet climate means many plants respond remarkably well to a hard cutback — gardenias, ixoras, heliconias and many native shrubs will bounce back strongly after being reduced by half. Other species — particularly leggy, root-bound palms or invasive tropical groundcovers — are better removed entirely than cut back. Fast-growing tropical species like monstera, climbing pandanus and agapanthus can take over a garden remarkably quickly and often need removal rather than management.
Soil quality is one of the most common problems we encounter in SE QLD garden makeovers — particularly on newer estates where builders' fill (compacted clay subsoil) sits just below the surface. Plants struggle in this material regardless of how well they're watered. Soil improvement before replanting is not optional on these sites. For mulch selection, sugar cane mulch is popular but breaks down rapidly in QLD's heat and humidity — we typically use forest fines or hardwood mulch that last 18–24 months rather than needing replacement twice a year.
Common Garden Makeover Scenarios We Handle
Most garden makeovers fall between $5,000 and $30,000 depending on size, planting density and any structural elements. We can also stage work — clear and prep now, plant later — if budget needs phasing.

A few days of professional work can transform the garden you've been avoiding into the one you want to spend time in.
Our Garden Makeovers Process
- Onsite Inspection & Vision Discussion
We assess what's worth keeping, what needs to go, and what's possible within the budget. We discuss your maintenance preferences and lifestyle to inform planting recommendations.
- Clearance & Soil Preparation
Dead, dying and overgrown material removed. Retained plants pruned back. Soil conditioned with compost, manure and any required amendments before replanting.
- Replanting & Mulching
New plants installed in prepared soil. Garden beds mulched to minimum 75mm depth — suppresses weeds, retains moisture and regulates soil temperature in QLD's climate.
- Edging, Defining & Feature Work
Garden bed edges defined cleanly (steel edging, concrete or timber). Small features installed where included — lighting, path sections, raised beds.
- Walkthrough & Care Guide
We walk through the completed garden, identify each new plant, and provide a written care guide covering first-year watering, fertilising schedule and what to watch for.
