Concreting That Lasts 30+ Years

Driveways, slabs, patios and pool surrounds — correctly specified, properly reinforced, built to handle the Queensland climate.

What Is Concreting?

Concrete is one of the most durable and low-maintenance surfaces available for outdoor areas, but the finished result is only as good as the preparation and specification behind it. A poorly prepared sub-base, incorrect concrete strength, missing expansion joints, or the wrong reinforcement for the application will all cause premature cracking, subsidence, and expensive repairs — often within just a few years.

One Call Property Care handles the full scope of residential and commercial concreting across South East Queensland: driveways, pathways, patios, pool surrounds, shed slabs, carport slabs, footpaths, retaining wall footings, and garden edging. Every project is scoped with the correct concrete strength grade (N20, N25, or N32 depending on the application and load), appropriate reinforcement (mesh or reinforcing bar), and properly placed expansion joints — which are critical in Queensland where thermal movement in summer is far greater than in cooler states.

Queensland's heat and UV conditions affect concrete in ways that differ from southern states. In summer, the workability window for fresh concrete is shorter because heat accelerates the set time, meaning a crew needs to pour, screed, and finish faster. Curing is also affected — direct sun and hot dry conditions can draw moisture out too quickly, weakening the surface layer. Our crews account for this: we schedule summer pours for early morning where possible, use curing compounds where appropriate, and maintain correct water-to-cement ratios regardless of conditions.

Sub-base preparation is arguably the most important factor in concrete longevity. Queensland's expansive black clay soils — particularly prevalent across Brisbane's western suburbs, Ipswich, and parts of Logan — require deeper compacted road base and, in some cases, additional engineering measures. Where coastal sand profiles exist on the Sunshine Coast and parts of the Gold Coast, compaction behaviour is different again. We assess soil conditions on every project before specifying the base depth.

Finish options include standard broom (the most common, slip-resistant finish for driveways and paths), exposed aggregate (very popular across SEQ for its texture and premium look), stencilled or stamped concrete (achieves a paver look at concrete cost), integral oxide colouring, and smooth trowelled finishes for internal slabs. Each finish has its place and its limitations, and we will help you choose the right one for your application, budget, and home style.

Concrete Finish Types — What's the Difference?

The finish you choose affects appearance, slip resistance, cost, and maintenance. Here is a plain-English comparison of the main concrete finish options used across South East Queensland.

Broom Finish

$85–$110 per m²

A steel broom is dragged across the surface while the concrete is still plastic, creating fine parallel lines. This is the most common finish across Australia — slip-resistant, durable, and the most cost-effective option. It suits driveways, pathways, and patios where appearance is not the primary concern.

Best for

  • Standard driveways and pathways
  • Side access and utility areas
  • Budget-conscious projects
  • Shed and carport slabs

Key benefits

  • Lowest cost concrete finish
  • Excellent slip resistance
  • Fast to apply — no extra process steps
  • No sealing required

Exposed Aggregate

$100–$140 per m²

The top layer of cement paste is washed away while the concrete is curing to reveal the aggregate (stone) beneath. A wide range of aggregate colours and sizes are available, giving the surface a premium textured appearance. Extremely popular across SEQ for driveways, patios, and pool surrounds.

Best for

  • Feature driveways and entertaining areas
  • Pool surrounds
  • Properties where kerb appeal matters
  • Areas where texture and slip resistance are both wanted

Key benefits

  • Premium appearance with wide colour options
  • Naturally slip-resistant texture
  • Very durable — stone aggregate is hard-wearing
  • Sealing optional but enhances colour

Stencilled / Stamped Concrete

$100–$145 per m²

Stencil or stamp patterns are pressed or cut into the surface of fresh concrete, then coloured with surface hardeners or oxide, creating the appearance of pavers, tiles, or stone at concrete cost. Suits entertaining areas and feature driveways where a decorative look is wanted without the cost of individual pavers.

Best for

  • Feature entertaining areas and patios
  • Decorative driveways
  • Pool surrounds where a paver look is wanted
  • Areas where a seamless surface is preferred over actual paving

Key benefits

  • Paver or tile appearance at lower installed cost than actual pavers
  • Wide pattern and colour range
  • No joints — no weeds, no shifting pavers
  • Sealed surface resists staining

Coloured Oxide Concrete

$100–$140 per m²

Iron oxide pigments are blended into the concrete mix at the batching plant, producing integral colour through the full depth of the slab. Unlike surface coatings, integral colour does not chip or peel. Available in earth tones, terracotta, charcoal, and a range of custom colours.

Best for

  • Premium residential driveways
  • Patios and entertaining areas
  • Homes where the concrete colour should complement the landscaping palette
  • Projects where a clean, consistent colour tone is wanted

Key benefits

  • Colour goes through full slab depth — not just surface
  • Will not chip, peel, or flake unlike coatings
  • Premium residential appearance
  • Can be combined with broom or exposed aggregate finish

Smooth Trowelled

$85–$110 per m²

A steel float or power trowel is used to achieve a very smooth, near-polished surface. Used for internal slabs, warehouse floors, and commercial applications. Not appropriate for outdoor wet areas — smooth concrete is a slip hazard when wet and must not be used for driveways, pool surrounds, or external paths.

Best for

  • Internal shed and garage floor slabs
  • Commercial and warehouse floors
  • Covered alfresco areas that will be tiled over
  • Any internal application where a tile or coating will be applied on top

Key benefits

  • Clean, flat surface ideal for tiling or coating
  • Suitable for internal dry environments
  • Professional, commercial-grade finish
  • Allows subsequent floor coverings to be applied

Spray-On Concrete Resurfacing

$40–$80 per m² (over existing concrete)

A polymer-modified cementitious overlay 3–6mm thick is spray-applied over existing structurally sound concrete to restore the surface. Can be finished in broom, stencil, or texture patterns. The right solution when the existing slab is structurally sound but the surface is worn, cracked cosmetically, or dated. Significantly cheaper than full demolition and replacement.

Best for

  • Existing driveways with surface wear but sound structure
  • Old stencilled or coloured concrete needing a refresh
  • Pool surrounds with cosmetic surface damage
  • Projects where the existing slab is level and structurally intact

Key benefits

  • Fraction of the cost of full concrete replacement
  • Completed in 1–2 days with minimal disruption
  • Wide finish and colour options available
  • Extends the life of the existing slab significantly

Finish selection should account for the application, the risk of slip when wet, the surrounding aesthetic, and your budget. We will advise on the most appropriate option for your specific project during the quotation.

Why Concrete Is a 30-Year Investment

Installed correctly, concrete is one of the most durable and lowest-maintenance outdoor surfaces available — particularly well suited to Queensland conditions.

  • 30–50 year lifespan when correctly specified and installed with proper base preparation
  • Zero ongoing maintenance compared to paving (no weeds in joints, no individual pavers to relay)
  • Withstands Queensland UV, extreme summer heat, and heavy rain without deteriorating
  • Correct drainage falls built into the pour prevent water pooling and long-term drainage problems
  • Wide finish options — broom, exposed aggregate, stencilled — suit any home style and price point
  • Adds tangible value to your property and improves sale appeal
  • No sealing required for standard broom and most exposed aggregate finishes
  • Robust enough for heavy vehicles, caravans, and trailers when correctly specified

The upfront cost of doing it right — correct base, correct strength, correct joints — eliminates the far greater cost of fixing it later.

Our Concreting Process

  1. Site Assessment & Quote

We assess the site, check soil type, measure the area, identify drainage requirements, and confirm the appropriate concrete strength, reinforcement, and base depth for your specific application. A detailed written quote is provided before any work begins.

  2. Excavation & Sub-Base Preparation

Existing material is excavated to the required depth, all soft spots and organic material are removed, and compacted road base is laid and compacted in layers using a plate compactor. This is the most critical step — no shortcutting on base depth or compaction.

  3. Formwork, Reinforcement & Expansion Joints

Formwork is set to correct levels and falls for drainage. Steel mesh or reinforcing bar is placed at the correct cover depth. Expansion joints are positioned at correct intervals — typically every 3–4 metres in SEQ conditions — to control thermal movement and prevent uncontrolled cracking.

  4. Concrete Pour & Finishing

Concrete is ordered to the specified strength grade, poured, screeded to level, and finished to the chosen surface texture. Broom, exposed aggregate, stencilled, or smooth trowelled finishes are all completed by experienced concreters who understand the timing window in Queensland conditions.

  5. Curing & Handover

Concrete is cured appropriately for the conditions — curing compound is applied where required. We advise on foot traffic and vehicle access timelines. The area is cleaned, formwork is removed, and the job is left neat. A 30-day workmanship guarantee applies to all work.
