The number refers to the compressive strength in megapascals at 28 days. N20 is a general-purpose mix used for pathways, garden edging, and light footings where loads are minimal. N25 is the standard residential specification for driveways and patios — it handles vehicle traffic and is specified in most residential projects. N32 is a higher-strength mix used for commercial driveways, heavy vehicle areas, pool surrounds under significant load, and any application where premium durability is required. Using N20 where N25 is specified will result in premature surface wear and cracking.

Steel mesh (SL72 or SL82 fabric) is the standard reinforcement for residential slabs, driveways, and patios. It sits within the slab and controls cracking by holding the concrete together if movement occurs. Reinforcing bar (reo bar) is used where higher tensile strength is needed — footings, thickened edges, retaining wall bases, and commercial applications. The two are sometimes used together in the same slab. Correct placement depth matters — mesh that sits on the ground rather than at mid-slab height provides minimal reinforcement benefit.

A standard residential driveway is typically 100mm thick (plus the compacted base beneath). A shed slab or carport slab is also generally 100mm, but with a 150mm thickened edge beam around the perimeter for added support. Heavy vehicle driveways are usually 125–150mm. Internal slabs on ground can be as thin as 85–100mm with mesh. Thickness alone does not guarantee performance — the compacted base beneath is equally important.

Foot traffic is generally safe after 24–48 hours. Light vehicles should wait a minimum of 7 days. Heavy vehicles should wait at least 14–28 days. Concrete continues to gain strength for 28 days after pouring — the 28-day mark is the industry standard for full strength specification. In Queensland summer heat, surface curing can appear advanced but the internal strength gain timeline still applies.

In some cases, yes — but it depends on the condition of the existing concrete, the thickness headroom available, and the application. A bonded overlay using a bonding agent can add 50–75mm to an existing slab to restore levels or cover surface damage. However, if the existing concrete is badly cracked, heaved, or has a failed base beneath it, overlaying will not fix the underlying problem. We assess existing concrete before recommending either an overlay or full demolition and replacement.

The most common causes are inadequate sub-base compaction (soil movement under the slab), missing or incorrectly spaced expansion joints (thermal expansion has nowhere to go), incorrect concrete strength specification, reinforcement placed at the wrong depth, tree root intrusion over time, and overloading beyond the design specification. Some minor surface cracking can occur from rapid surface drying in hot Queensland conditions if curing is not managed. Structural cracking that lifts or separates sections is always a base or reinforcement issue.

Both are excellent — the choice is mainly aesthetic and budget. Broom finish is slightly cheaper, has excellent slip resistance, and is extremely durable. Exposed aggregate costs 15–30% more, provides a premium textured appearance with wide colour options, and is very popular across SEQ. Both have similar lifespans and maintenance requirements. For pool surrounds, exposed aggregate is often preferred over plain broom due to its texture and appearance. Neither requires sealing, though sealing exposed aggregate can enhance and protect the colour.

A standard replacement residential driveway generally does not require a development approval (DA), but a crossover permit from your local council is typically required where the driveway meets the kerb and footpath. Some councils also have requirements around driveway width, materials, and stormwater management. We advise on what is required for your specific council area before beginning work.

We use jackhammers and demolition equipment to break up the existing slab, then load and dispose of the broken concrete at a licensed facility. Concrete demolition and removal is priced separately from the new concrete installation. Old reinforcement is also removed and recycled. Spray-on resurfacing involves applying a thin 3–6mm polymer-modified coating over existing sound concrete to restore the surface appearance. It can be finished in broom, stencilled, or texture patterns. It is the right option when the existing concrete slab is structurally sound but the surface is worn, stained, or dated. It is significantly cheaper than full demolition and replacement. It is not appropriate if the base or structure is compromised.

Properly specified and installed concrete with correct base preparation and expansion joints will typically last 30–50 years with minimal maintenance. The most common cause of early failure is shortcuts taken during construction — thin bases, missing reinforcement, wrong concrete grade, or missing expansion joints. Concrete installed to correct specification in Queensland conditions is an extremely long-lasting surface.

New turf needs to be watered 2–3 times daily for the first 2 weeks to establish roots. After that, reduce to daily watering for week 3, then every 2–3 days from week 4.
