What Is Gyprock Repairs?
Gyprock repair (also referred to as plasterboard or drywall repair) is the patching and restoration of damaged interior walls and ceilings to a smooth, paint-ready condition. Plasterboard is the standard wall material in Queensland homes built since the 1970s, and it's susceptible to damage from impacts, doorknob holes, removal of wall fixtures, water leaks, and settling cracks. A professional Gyprock repair patches the physical damage, builds up the repair in appropriate compound layers, feathers it out to blend with the surrounding wall, and sands to a smooth finish — textured to match the existing wall surface where required. A good Gyprock repair is essentially invisible after painting. A poor repair — visible as a lump, depression, or textured inconsistency under raking light — can be more noticeable than the original hole.
Our Gyprock Repairs Process
- Damage Assessment
We assess the damage type, size, and depth to determine the appropriate repair approach — small patching compound repairs for nail holes and fine cracks, backing board repairs for larger holes, or full section replacement for severe water damage.
- Preparation
Damaged material is removed cleanly, edges are prepared square and secured for backing, and any source of moisture causing damage is confirmed as resolved before closing up.
- Backing Installation (For Larger Holes)
Backing strips, plasterboard patches, or new sections of board are fixed behind larger holes to provide a substrate for the compound layers.
- Compound Application
Joint compound is applied in multiple layers — each layer wider than the last, feathered out at the edges — allowing adequate drying time between coats. Fibreglass mesh tape is used for cracks.
- Sanding and Texturing
The repair is sanded smooth and the texture is matched to the surrounding wall surface — whether smooth, fine sand, or textured. The repair is primed and inspected under raking light before paint is applied.
