What Is Skirting & Architraves?
Skirting boards and architraves are the timber or MDF trim profiles that finish the junctions between walls and floors (skirting), and around door and window frames (architraves). They serve both a practical purpose — covering the gaps and imperfections at these junctions — and an aesthetic one, defining the style and character of a room's interior. In Queensland homes, these trim elements are particularly susceptible to damage in tiled or polished floor renovations, moisture-related swelling in bathrooms and kitchens, and general knocks and damage over time. New skirting and architraves are required in any room renovation, after floor installation, and in new additions. They're also one of the most cost-effective ways to lift the finished appearance of a room.
Our Skirting & Architraves Process
- Profile and Material Selection
We discuss the appropriate profile (height, style) and material — MDF for painted interiors, timber for stained or oiled finishes, moisture-resistant profiles for wet areas — that best suits your home's style and the room's application.
- Measurement and Cutting
All walls and openings are measured accurately. Skirting and architraves are cut with precise internal and external mitres at corners, and scribed to any uneven floor or wall surfaces.
- Priming (Painted Profiles)
MDF profiles are checked for adequate priming before installation — bare MDF must be primed before fixing to prevent moisture absorption and paint adhesion issues.
- Fixing
Profiles are fixed with appropriate fixings — secret nailed or screw-fixed with countersunk holes filled — ensuring secure attachment without visible fixing marks in the finished surface.
- Setting and Finishing
All nail holes and fine gaps at wall junctions are filled with flexible filler. Joints are caulked and surfaces are prepared for painting — delivering a finish ready for the painter's final coat.
