Load-bearing wall removal requires structural engineering — the engineer specifies the beam required to carry the load that the wall was supporting. Once engineered, we carry out the removal and beam installation as a carpentry project. This work requires a building permit in most cases.

Standard residential walls in Queensland are typically framed with 90x45mm or 70x45mm seasoned hardwood or pine studs, depending on the wall height and loading. The specific specifications are determined by the engineer or Australian Standard span tables.

A single room addition typically takes 2–5 days for framing depending on the room size and complexity. Connection to the existing structure and any structural modifications take additional time.

In Queensland, most decks under 10m² and attached pergolas under certain dimensions are exempt from council approval (a Building Development Approval). However, larger decks, decks above a certain height, and freestanding structures over certain sizes typically require a BA. We check the relevant requirements for your specific job and council area as part of our quoting process and can assist with lodging a BA application where required.

For Queensland conditions, we recommend hardwood species like Spotted Gum, Blackbutt, Merbau, and Ironbark — these are durable, termite-resistant, and look beautiful. Treated pine is a more affordable option and performs well with regular oiling. Composite decking is a low-maintenance alternative that won't rot or splinter. We'll discuss the options, maintenance requirements, and price differences during your quote.

A standard timber deck (50–80m²) typically takes 3–7 days from the start of construction. This includes setting posts, laying bearers and joists, installing decking boards, and building stairs and balustrades. Larger or more complex builds take longer. Lead times from quote to start depend on our current schedule — contact us for current availability.

Queensland's UV and humidity requires regular deck maintenance. We recommend: cleaning the deck with a deck cleaner annually, sanding back rough or weathered areas every 2–3 years, and oiling or re-coating with a quality timber finish every 1–2 years depending on sun exposure and foot traffic. A well-maintained hardwood deck will last 25–40 years. We also offer deck oiling and restoration as a separate service.

Yes — we build both freestanding and house-attached pergolas. Attached pergolas involve fixing into the fascia or wall of the house and require careful waterproofing and flashing to prevent water ingress. We also offer pergolas with roof panels (Colorbond, polycarbonate) for weather protection, and can integrate lighting and ceiling fans into the design.

Yes — sloped blocks often make the best deck sites because they allow for a raised deck with views and airflow beneath. We use deep concrete footings and adjustable steel posts to create a level deck platform regardless of ground slope. Building on slopes does require careful engineering and can increase cost, which we'll factor into your quote.

Yes — pool decking is one of our most popular projects. We build timber and composite pool decks that comply with Queensland pool fencing and safety requirements. Hardwood pool decks look fantastic and are durable. We also ensure correct drainage around pool areas to prevent water pooling and slipping hazards. We'll coordinate with any pool fencing requirements during the design.
