What Is Framing?
Timber framing is the construction of wall, floor, and roof structural frames using dimensioned timber — the skeleton that supports the rest of the building. In residential construction, framing work is required for home renovations (opening up or adding walls), room additions and extensions, structural modifications (removing or adding load-bearing walls), and new building projects. All framing work in Queensland must be carried out by or supervised by a licensed carpenter and comply with Australian Standard AS 1684 (Residential Timber-Framed Construction) and the National Construction Code. Accurate, properly fixed framing is fundamental to a quality building outcome — it determines whether walls are straight and plumb, floors are level, and the structure performs correctly under load and wind action.
Our Framing Process
- Plans and Approvals
For any framing work beyond minor repair, building plans and council approval are typically required. We work with draftspeople and building certifiers to ensure all required approvals are in place before framing commences.
- Layout and Setting Out
The framing layout is set out accurately on site — wall lines are marked, structural openings dimensioned, and any existing elements to be connected to are located.
- Wall Plate and Bottom Plate Installation
Top and bottom plates are installed to the layout. Bottom plates on slabs are fixed with appropriate anchors; plates to existing framing are connected with appropriate hardware.
- Stud Installation and Plumbing
Studs are fixed at the specified spacing (typically 450mm or 600mm centres), plumbed accurately and braced during construction. Openings for doors and windows are framed with headers and cripple studs.
- Nogging, Bracing, and Connection
Horizontal noggings are installed at the required heights, structural bracing is installed per engineering requirements, and connections to existing structure are made and fastened appropriately.
