What Is Cladding Installation?
Cladding is the exterior skin of a home — the layer of material that covers the structural frame and provides weather protection while defining the home's visual character. In Queensland, common cladding types include timber weatherboards (particularly on traditional Queenslander homes), fibre cement weatherboards and sheets, James Hardie board-and-batten products, and modern composite cladding systems. Cladding installation is required for new construction, additions, and renovation projects, as well as for replacing damaged, rotted, or asbestos-containing cladding on older homes. Correctly installed and well-maintained cladding is a critical component of the building envelope — it's what keeps water out of the wall cavity and prevents moisture damage to the structure.
Our Cladding Installation Process
- Assessment and Selection
We assess the existing or planned cladding situation — existing substrate condition, wall framing, window and door details — and discuss cladding options that suit the home's style, budget, and performance requirements.
- Preparation
Existing cladding to be removed is taken off carefully. The wall substrate (framing, existing sheathing) is inspected and any damaged framing or moisture barriers are repaired or replaced.
- Moisture Barrier Installation
An appropriate sarking or weatherproofing membrane is installed over the wall framing before cladding is fixed — a critical step for keeping moisture out of the wall cavity.
- Cladding Installation
Cladding boards, sheets, or panels are installed from the bottom up at the correct gauge (exposure), with appropriate fixings, flashing at junctions, and with timber cladding, the required drainage gap.
- Sealing, Priming, and Finishing
All joints, ends, and junctions are sealed with appropriate flexible sealant. Fibre cement products are primed and painted. Timber cladding is primed or stained ready for the finish painting coat.
